Dynamics of Excitability

Example: Two neurons can have similar ionic mechanisms (voltage-dependent persistent Na and K currents), yet different qualitative behavior.

We will see that these neurons have

• Different dynamical (bifurcation) mechanisms of excitability.

• Different neuro-computational properties:

(Neuron 1 is an integrator, Neuron 2 is a resonator.)

Thus, it is important to analyze bifurcations in neuron dynamics.
